The highlight of this trip was hiking from Magome-juku to Tsumago-juku on the so-called “Samurai Road” between Gifu and Nagano. Walking through mountain villages that have been preserved as late Edo period ( 1860’s ) post towns, it really feels like you’ve traveled back in time. The trail is about 6 miles one way, with some rough terrain along the way, but it’s romantic to think that processions of samurai and Tokugawa princesses once passed through here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
