I scaled down the 17-inch Eden Bebe head to create a head for a 15-inch doll. I’ve always wanted a smaller Eden, and this size is perfect. I used Sawako Eden as a reference for the painting and set antique glass eyes. The 15-inch Eden Bebe will be available once I have a right-sized body mold, probably sometime next year. (This doll is not for sale)
I created a Chevrot-style body for 12-inch Bru, featuring metal upper arms and legs covered in leather with hinged hip joints. She has beautiful bisque shoulder plate and bisque Bru hands. The lower legs are composition, and I applied an antique finish to the leather and lower legs. (This doll is reserved)
The highlight of this trip was hiking from Magome-juku to Tsumago-juku on the so-called “Samurai Road” between Gifu and Nagano. Walking through mountain villages that have been preserved as late Edo period ( 1860’s ) post towns, it really feels like you’ve traveled back in time. The trail is about 6 miles one way, with some rough terrain along the way, but it’s romantic to think that processions of samurai and Tokugawa princesses once passed through here.
I just came back from a trip to Japan the other day. This time, my son and I went back to see my family, so I did not have any personal events.
However, I went to help out Alan Pate’s doll tour group from the U.S. for their visit to Kaiko-Doll in Tokyo. Kaiko-Doll exhibited and sold many rare dolls, including a friendship-doll size Ichimatsu doll by Hirata Goyo, as well as articulated body Ichimatsu dolls and posed dolls also by Goyo. The large friendship size doll was a real beauty, and was a perfect duplicate of a Goyo friendship-doll in my town. ( except she had closed mouth, the one in Reno has open mouth with teeth ) I was very lucky to be able to see her. That evening, we went on a cruise on the Sumida River with the tour group and Japanese doll artists. Unfortunately, it was raining, but it was quite nice to see the skyscrapers and the Skytree in the rain.
