The dress and fabrics

London Olympic was wonderful ! Usually I never have enough time to watch TV for long hours but I took time to watch games this summer.
My favorite was volleyball and rhythmic gymnastics. I use to play volleyball at school so I become very excited when I have chance to watch volleyball games.
Now it’s time to get back to doll making and I finally picked fabric and design for her dress.
I had so many design choices for this special doll and I thought about exploring  non- traditional design this time. Then I asked myself ” what if I could own a perfect Bru doll, what dress do I want her to wear ??”
I like Bru doll to wear a dress with low neck line to show her beautiful bisque breast plate and have narrow waist to enhance her Chevrot body….
I have made many dresses with this design in the past and I think I will be making another one. She is going to have very traditional Bru dress with antique silk brocade jacket and red silk skirt.
I originally thought she will look good on blue but she wanted the color more bright and cheerful. So the color she picked was “gold tone silk brocade and cranberry red “. 
I will use antique gold silk brocade for her jacket and cranberry red silk for her skirt and front panel. Both fabrics are from late 19th century and I saved them for my special doll.
I hope she will be happy with the dress I make since she seem to be very picky for what she wears. I have fear that she might say ” Just one dress is not good enough for me. I need more!” ….
I have received many inquiries if she is going to be for sale. I also received few offers already.
Yes, she will be for sale when I complete her and I am not accepting any offers till then. I have not decided her price or sales method at this time.
I just want to concentrate for finishing her for now and will announce on my website once she becomes available.
It will be a bit slow process but I appreciated your patients.

ロンドンオリンピックは素晴らしかったですね!
今まではゆっくりテレビを見る暇もなかったのですが、今回は初めてゆっくり観戦しました。私は特にバレーボールとリズミック体操が好きです。
学生のころバレーボールをやっていたので、テレビでバレーの試合を見る機会があると、とても盛り上がります。(他のスポーツはあまり関心ないのですが）
さて、気分を換えてドールメイキングを再開です。
やっと、ドレスの生地とデザインが決まりました。
ドレスのデザインには本当にいろんなチョイスがあってかなり迷いました。今回は思い切って斬新なデザインで行こうかとも思いましたが、”もし私が理想のＢｒｕを持つことができたら、どんなドレスを着て欲しいだろう？”と考えたとき、思い浮かぶのはやっぱり、ビスクのショルダープレートが見えるような襟ぐりが大きく開いたもので、ウェストがきゅっと締まった典型的なＢｒｕドレスを選ぶと思います。
今までこのデザインのＢｒｕドレスはたくさん作りましたが、また作ることになりそうです。ジャケットにはアンテイークのブロケード地を使い、スカート部分は真っ赤なシルクです。
はじめはこの娘には絶対青が似合うと信じていましたが、彼女がもっと目立つ色がいいというので赤になりました。ジャケットにはゴールド系のシルクブロケードを、スカート部分はクランベリーレッドのシルク地です。どちらも19世紀後半に作られたアンティーク地で、いつか創る特別なの娘のためにとっておいたものです。
それにしても、いったい私が作るドレスでご満足いただけるのか今から心配です。
なんだかとても気位の高い娘のようですから。。。。
あとで　”ドレスが一着だけなんてとんでもないわ！もう一つ作って！”とかって言われそうですが。。。
ところで、この作品は販売されるのか、たくさんのお問い合わせをいただきました。すでにオファーもいくつかいただきました。
この娘は完成しだい販売いたしますが、それまでオファーを受け取る予定はありません。
お値段や販売方法もまだ決まっていないのが現状です。
今は作品を完成させることに集中したいので、販売については後ほどＨＰにてお知らせいたします。
のろのろした対応で申し訳ありませんが、どうか気長にお付き合いください。

Body and wig

Usually, it takes about 4 weeks for me to make a Chevrot style body but I had made some parts in advance for this size body so it did not take very long to assemble.
The leather body is stained to make look old. I painted her bisque to be pinker this time so that the doll looks more like antique.
Meanwhile I received a mohair wig from Wendy Feidt and she looks gorgeous with a brand new wig.
I was also looking into using antique wig but finding the right size and style from limited supplies was not so easy. Wendy’s wigs always look wonderful for either antique or reproduction dolls and I am 100% happy with this one.
This girl happen to have ” Diva” like personality. I am having hard time finding the right color and design of the dress. I am already spending days just looking for the dress design but no luck so far.
She will stay “undressed” for a while because of this reason.
Picky,picky,picky ….

シェブローボディーを作るのに普通は最低でも4週間はかかるのですが、今回はパーツを事前に作っておいたので、組み立てするだけであまり時間をとりませんでした。
革の部分はアンティーク風に仕上げ、ビスクもアンティークっぽくなるようピンク色に絵付けしてあります。
オーダーしておいたモヘアのウッグが、早速ウェンデイーさんから届きました。
この娘には特別アンティークのウッグを使おうかとも迷ったのですが、アンティークウィッグでサイズや色、スタイルがばっちり合う物を見つけるのは至難の業です。
その点ウェンデイーさんのウッグはアンティークドールでもリプロでも似合うので
今回はこのウィッグで大満足です。
さて、ドレス作りが難航しています。
どうもこの娘は”ディーバ”っぽいわがままな性格のようで、ドレスの色や生地に、あれも嫌だこれも嫌だと注文が多く、デザインを考えるだけでもすでに何日も費やしています。
とうわけで、しばらくこのままのお姿でいてもらわなければなりません。
わがままだなぁ。。。

Bru head #2 with antique eyes

My ultimate goal is to make a Bru doll looks just like an antique.
But I never achieved this goal maybe because my painting still looks
” too new” or ” too neat” compare to antique dolls.
 I was hoping to break through this ” wall ” someday and create a Bru doll looks so close to antique.
I think this head came pretty close to my dream.
Using antique eyes makes such a difference! I could never create this ” look” by using modern glass eyes.
I thought I really liked looks of my first Bru head with modern eyes before I made this head, but my heart was pounding from excitement when I set antique eyes on this head.
She started breathing and speaking to me when I applied eyes on her.
Now my mind is set to use this head to make a complete doll.
I took photos of her with temporary wig and bonnet. Her dress will be in blue color.
It will be so much fun to make a fabulous dress for her!

 本物のアンティークと見分けがつかないＢｒｕを作るのが私の夢のひとつなのですが、今までその夢がかなったことはありませんでした。
それはたぶん、私の絵付けがアンティークにくらべて線が”新しすぎる”ことだったり”きっちりしすぎている”ことだったりするかもしれません。
いつかはその壁を破って、よりアンティークに近い作品を作れる日が来ることを夢見ていましたが、このヘッドの出来上がりはその夢にかなり近づけたような気持ちにさせてくれます。
もちろん、アンティークのグラスアイを使った効果は絶大です。
現代物のグラスアイでは、この雰囲気はなかなか出せません。
現代物のグラスアイを使った一作目のヘッドもかなり気に入ってましたが、二作目のヘッドにアンティークアイを入れた瞬間の胸のドキドキはなんと表現したらいいのでしょう。
アンティークのＢｒｕをはじめて見た衝撃に似てると言うか。。。
目を入れたとたんにただの無機質の人形に命が宿り、私に語りかけてきました。もうこのヘッドを使う以外には考えられません。
画像は仮のウィッグとボネットをつけて撮影しました。ドレスの色はブルーの予定です。
この娘に似合う、素敵なドレスを完成させるのが今から待ち遠しいです。

Maybe change of plans …?

My first trial Bru head came out form kiln. I had to adjust eye cut to fit antique eyes since their shape is different from modern glass eyes. Well, eye cut was not quite what I wanted so I started working on the second head.
Meanwhile I tried to set modern light blue glass eyes on the first head.
Actually I really like how she looks with these eyes !
I was going to make blue dress for antique eyed Bru simply because blue color would be perfect to complement here antique eyes.
But also I have been wanting to make a pink dress for quite a while. And this Bru head looks very good on pink color when I draped over pink silk fabric.
There is also a wonderful design of Bru dress that I have been wanting to make for a long time.
Maybe I will go ahead use this head instead and make her a pink dress.
I have saved these beautiful antique silk fabrics for my special doll.
Hope I can use them this time.     Humm, I am getting excited!

試作品のＢｒｕヘッド一号が出来上がりました。現代物とは形やサイズが違うアンティークアイを合わせる為に、アイカットを微妙に調整したのですが、なんだかいまいちな出来上がりなので、次のヘッドの作成に取り掛かりました。
ついでに、と言うか遊びがてら、一号ヘッドに現代物のグラスアイを入れてみたところ、なんだか良い感じです。
アンティークアイのＢｒｕにはブルーのドレスを作る予定でした。あのグラスアイの色には、ブルーしか考えられません、というくらい固定したイメージがあったので。
ところがこの一号ヘッドには、ピンク色のドレスが良く似合います。
しかも、ずーっと作ってみたかった素晴らしいデザインのＢｒｕドレスがあるんですが、そのために取って置いたアンティークのピンクのシルク地を使って作れそうな感じです。
もしかしたら予定を変更して、このヘッドで完成させるかもしれません。
良いヘッドが出来上がると、がぜんやる気が出てきます。ちょっとワクワクしてきました。

My Halopeau doll in Yamazaki Collection

One of my latest project was to make a Halopeau head with an antique body.
I have made few Halopeau heads lately but this was the first time I attached my doll head on antique body.
I did not realize finding the correct size and style of antique body is so challenging.
After few months of searching, I finally found an appropriate body for her.
She is now part of Yamazaki collection who is well known doll collector in Japan.
I am extremely honored that Mr. and Mrs. Yamazaki posted my Halopeau doll on their website for everyone to see.

最近やっとやり終えたオーダーのひとつが、アンティークボディーに取り付けるアッシュヘッドの製作です。アッシュのヘッドは最近数多く作りましたが、アンティークボディーに取り付けるのは今回が初めてです。
それにしても、サイズやスタイルが正しいアンティークボディーを探すのがこれほど大変だとは。何ヶ月かかかって、ようやく見つけました。
この娘は現在、福井の山崎夫妻のコレクションとして飾られています。
頭からつま先まで、すばらしいお支度をしてくださり見違えるようです。ご夫妻の素晴らしいコレクションと共に、ＨＰでもご紹介していただきました。私としてはかなり恐縮していますが、とても光栄に思います。ありがとうございました。

I am here!

It’s been three months since I posted last comment. ( Wow! Already?)
It almost looks as if I took three months off but not quite. I completed all orders I was working on, and yes, I did take vacation time for couple of weeks.
Now I am ready to tackle on new doll.
I recently acquired these pair of antique paper weight eyes with beautiful spiral thread. But the most impressive part is the dome.
They have nice high crystal dome that you don’t see in today’s glass eyes.
Antique Bru dolls often have eyes with very high dome that looks almost wet with tears.
These huge dome also reflects more light and give extra sparkles on doll eyes. I love dolls with sparkly eyes. Doll eyes are one of the most important features and I pay extra attention when I create my dolls.
So, I am hoping to be able to make a Bru doll by using these antique eyes. The size of the doll will be around 16 inches and it will be Bru Jne doll.
Since I will be designing the entire doll, I am planning to post progress of the doll on my blog so that people can see what I am up to.
But I warn you that my progress will be slow as a snail. Please be patient with me and email me for any questions.

なんだか3ヶ月もお休みを取っていたかのようですが、実は残っていたオーダーの仕上げやらで忙しかったです。
あ、でもしっかり2週間ほどバケーションにも行ってきました。
さて、今月から気分も新たに新作に取り掛かりたいと思います。
最近、画像にあるアンティークのグラスアイを手に入れました。クリスタルドームの張りがある、スパイラルスレッドの素晴らしいグラスアイです。
このくらい張りのあるドームは、現代物のグラスアイではなかなか再現できないんですよね。
ドームに張りがあるとまるで目が潤んでいるように見えて、きらきら度がさらに増します。私は眼がきらきらしたお人形に特に惹かれるので、作品を作るときには、眼には特別な注意を払っています。
なので、このアンティークアイを使って新作を作れたら良いなと思っています。ドールサイズは16インチのBruJneの予定です。
これからは、私がすべてデザインした作品になるので、その過程を少しづつブログにアップしていく予定です。
ただし、かなりスローな進行になると思いますので、気長にお付き合いしてください。

I have received these wonderful pictures from customers recently.
Start with this 16 inch Bru Jne 6. I made the bisque head and bisque shoulder plate, Bru hand and composition legs. And my customer finished the doll by making Chevrot style body by herself.
This is the first time I received pictures from a customer who made her own Chevrot body.
If you ever attempt to make this body, it is very complicated and time consuming.
Not only that, making the body in correct balance with the head is also not easy to do.
I am very impressed with the quality of this body. She did such a great job! Congratulations!
She also made her a beautiful dress by using antique fabrics and trims. She wrote me that she was saving these fabrics for her special doll.I am happy that she finally got her special doll!

今回はお客様から最近送られてきた画像をアップします。
はじめに、１６インチのBruJne6をご紹介します。
この娘は、ヘッド、ショルダープレート、ビスクハンド、コンポジションレッグを私が作り、あとはお客様が仕上げました。
私が作ったヘッドに他の方が作られたボデイーを取り付けるケースは時々ありますが、このお客様はなんと、ご自分でシェブローボディーを作られました。
シェブローボディー作りにチャレンジされた方ならお分かりになると思いますが、このタイプのボディーはかなり複雑で、作るのにとても時間がかかります。しかもヘッドや他のパーツとのバランスを上手く合わせて仕上げるのがまた難しいのです。
この方のボディーはとてもよくできていて、私もびっくりしました。素晴らしい出来です。
アンテイークの生地を使って作られたこのドレスも、お客様の手作りです。
とっておきの娘のために、大事に取って置いた生地だそうです。私のドールを”とっておきの娘”に仕上げてくださり、本当にありがとうございました。
 
Next one is a lovely 18 inch Circle Dot Bru.
She was sold without a dress and my customer made this dress for the doll.
She looks soooo sweet in this turquoise color silk jacket and lace over the skirt dress.
I especially love the picture that she is holding two teddy bears. She looks very happy and sweet and brings smile on everyone who sees this photo.　
It’s always nice to see how my girls look happy at new home.

さて、次の娘は１８インチのサークルドットブリュです。この娘はドレス無しでお客様の元へ行きました。
ブルーのシルクジャケットとレーススカートのコンビネーションがすごく可愛いです。
特にテディーベアに囲まれてる画像は、彼女がいかにも幸せそうで見てるほうも思わず微笑んでしまいますね。まるで人形を通り越して、本物の女の子みたいです。
 
私が送り出した娘たちが新しいお家で楽しく過ごしている姿を見るのは、作り手としてこれ以上嬉しいことはありません。素晴らしい画像を送ってくださり、ありがとうございました。

My new and last custom order doll ~ 19 inch Bru Jne 11 ~ SOLD

 Spring is already here and I just finished a lovely doll perfect for this season.

She is a 19 inch tall Bru Jne 11. Her head mold is the same 19″ Bru Jne 11 mold I have been using for more than 10 years

This mold was originally made in early 80’s so it’s a vintage mold.
Most of doll artists probably do not use mold this old because of wear on mold causes to looses crispness of facial features.Also mold seam line on the side of the head becomes more prominent even after careful cleaning.Another wards all of my 19″ Bru Jne 11 doll have very visible seam line on head and hands.

 I prefer to use this vintage mold because of fuzzy mold line of eyes lets me create variety of size of eye cut.
Antique Bru dolls come with many facial expressions. Some look very sweet and some have a sharp piercing look. ( I happen to like both of them. )

I can create different facial expressions from the same mold, and being able to alter the shape of eyes is one of the important key to do this.
 It’s not very easy to do this procedure with new mold with crisp eye shape.
 
In order to create a softer and younger look on this doll, I also paid extra attention to her eye brows.
The shape of the eye brows is gently curved, and the color is fading away towards nose bridge.
 Choosing a darker shade of eye color also helps to create a sweet look.
The corners of her lips are painted slightly upward to give the hint of a smile, and I painted her upper lip fuller than her bottom lip to create more child-like lips.
People may not notice these small details by glancing at her, but they make big a difference in the final appearance of a doll’s face.
 
Some people may have noticed that her ecru and baby blue silk dress is the same design as my AT doll in the gold dress.
It’s lots of fun to create different dresses by using the same pattern.I alternate decorations on the collars and the trim above the skirt.
And I applied ribbons below the puffed sleeves instead of on the cuffs.
It sounds easy to fix but it took me many hours to come up with this design. I tried different styles of decorations to find out which works the best.
Each trim or ribbons and lace has to have the right balance of color and shape when applied to the dress.
Sometimes thinking about design and detail seems to take more time than the actual sewing.
I would easily spend a few days in this process, including resizing patterns and finding the right materials.
But if you love dolls, planning how to decorate your doll is one of the most fun parts, and we all know that.
 

Today, I have a very important announcement I have to make.
This will be my last custom ordered doll I will make.
I have decided to discontinue taking custom ordered dolls permanently for personal reasons.
I have been making custom ordered dolls for more than five years, and I have met many wonderful customers and doll friends.
I could not have come this far without your support.
I cannot say enough to show my appreciation to these many wonderful people I have done business with.Thank you so very much.
I will still continue making dolls but will be producing fewer numbers.
I will be posting a doll for sale on my website as I make each new doll, and the doll will be sold to the first person who commits to purchase.
The style of my dolls will not change. My goal is to make a doll looks as authentic as possible including costume.
However, they will not be custom ordered dolls. Each doll will be entirely designed by me and reflecting my personal taste.
 I am hoping to finish at least one more doll before the end of this year, but I am not sure at this point. We will see.
 
I am deeply sorry for the many customers who were looking forward for me to start taking new orders. I hope you will find a doll you like from the dolls I will be making in the future.

長かった冬も終わり、ようやく春めいてきました。

この時期にぴったりな、春らしい可愛らしいBruが完成したのでお披露目します。
１９インチのBru Jne 11です。
このヘッドモールドは私が１０年以上使っている古いもので、もともとは８０年代に作られたビンテージモールドです。
たぶんほとんどの作家さんは、こんなに古いモールドは使わないでしょう。
古くなったモールドは顔の細部の彫りが甘くなり、モールドの合わせ目にあたるシームラインが、クリーニング時にどんなに削り取っても焼成後に浮き彫りになって出てきます。
（私の作る１９インチBruは、全部シームラインが浮き彫りになってるタイプなので、それが気になる方にはお勧めできません）
それなのにこの古いモールドを好んで使うわけは、彫りが甘くなっている分アイカットを自由に変えることができるからです。
アンテイークのＢｒｕにはいろんな表情の娘がいます。
可愛らしいお顔の娘から、目つきが鋭いタイプまでさまざまです。(私はどちらも好きです）
同じモールドから違った表情の娘を作り出すには、アイカットの形を自由に変えれることが重要です。
 
今回の作品は、可愛らしい表情を出すことに気を配りました。
アイカットのほかに重要なのが、眉毛の形です。眉毛の線は柔らかいカーブで、鼻に向かって色が薄くなるように絵付けしています。
あと、グラスアイの色は濃い目のほうが優しい感じになります。
この娘の場合は、微笑んでいる表情になるよう唇の端が少しだけ上がり気味に絵付けしてあります。
さらに上唇をふっくらした感じにすることによって、より甘い雰囲気が出ると思います。
こういう細かい部分は、説明されないと気付かないものですが、全体の雰囲気を作るのにとても重要な役割を果たしています。
 
お気づきになった方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、この娘のドレスはＡＴのゴールド色のドレスと同じパターンからできています。
同じパターンを使って違った雰囲気のドレスを作るのはなかなか楽しいです。
今回は襟のデザインを変え、スカート上の飾りを別のスタイルにしました。
説明してみると何だそれだけか、と言うことになりますが、実際このデザインに落ち着くまでかなりの時間がかかっています。
いろんなタイプや色の飾りをあれこれ試して、色と形が他のドレスの部分と上手く調和するものを選ばなければなりません。
こういう目立たないことに費やす時間が私の場合は実はかなり多いのです。
お人形好きの皆さんならわかると思いますが、こうやってとっかえひっかえお気に入りのお人形の飾り付けをしているときが、一番幸せなんですよね。
 
さて、今回はとても重要なお知らせがあります。
今まで５年以上カスタムオーダーの作品を作ってきましたが、今回をもちましてカスタムオーダーの作品制作を終了することになりました。
 
カスタムオーダーはお客様と相談しながら作っていくいわば二人三脚の作品で、皆さんのご協力無しには完成させることができません。
今までたくさんの素晴らしいお客様に恵まれ、私一人では作り出せなかったような素敵な作品を作り出すことができました。
いままでお世話になったお客様や、励ましてくださった方々にこの場を借りて深くお礼を申し上げます。
これからは私がすべてデザインした一点ものの作品を中心に、完成次第ＨＰにて販売させていただくことになります。
もちろん作風は今までと変わりまりません。フレンチドールを主に、あくまでもアンテイークに近いクオリティーの高い作品作りを目指していきます。
ただしドールメイキングに避ける時間が少なくなるので、製作できる数はかなり減少する予定です。
いつかオーダーメイドの作品を、と期待されていた方々には大変申し訳ありません。
予定としては、今年中にもう一体ほど完成できればと思っています。

New Bru Brevete head

I recently acquired this new Bru Brevete head mold to make 18 inch doll.
My other Brevete mold I have been using makes 17 inch doll and has more baby like face.
This new mold has larger eye cut and her facial sculpting reminds me early French fashion doll or Bebe Modele’ ??

My customer attached this head on antique Brevete body and sent me a picture recently.
It fits perfectly on 12 inch antique Brevete body and she looks great.

最近新しいブリュブレベテのヘッドモールドを購入しました。
いままで使っていた17インチよりちょっとだけ大き目の18インチサイズです。
でもお顔の作りがずいぶん違います。アイカットがかなり大きく、頬もブレベテの特徴であるふっくらした感じが少なく、なんだかフレンチファッションドールかべべモデーレを思い出させる顔つきです。

12インチのアンティークブレベテボディーに、私が作ったヘッドとショルダープレートをつけたそうです。
バランス的にもとてもよく合っていると思います。
 

New year, New doll

A Happy New Year !
I am starting the new year with a new face on my website.
It’s been five years since I opened my website, and I have had so many visitors since then.
I truly appreciate all the doll fans who came to view my website. My new website is more organized, and you can find dolls easily. Also now you can leave a comment in my guest book .
 
I have created a new doll perfect to be the cover girl of my new website. She is a 24-inch Bru Jne 11 with mocha colored skin. She can be a Mulatto doll but she is actually a Creole child from the 1860s .I had this order during the summer of 2011. My customer had a vision of her doll as “ Creole child from the 1860s pre-Civil War era “.I did not have much knowledge about Creole culture. So I started out by studying about it first.
 
Most of the dolls I make are reproductions of dolls dressed as girls in 1880s style. But this doll needs a dress designed from 1860s pre-Civil War era.To find periodically correct designs was another challenge since I am not familiar with them. I flipped through many design books and searched on websites. My customer also helped me to find dress designs. Then I saw this silk fabric at the UFDC convention in July, I immediately fell in love with it. I seem to get more inspired when I find the right fabric than by just looking through books. I also found a painting of a little girl from the 1860s and I was drawn to the color and design of the dress that she was wearing. I decided to use this painting as my inspiration to create a dress for my new doll.
 
Choosing a right style wig was another challenge to make this doll look authentic.Thank goodness for Wendy Feidt who creates many wigs for my dolls. She had a hair style perfect for an 1860s little girl. I added antique silk velvet ribbon at each side to complement her skin color. My customer wanted to display this doll in a sitting position, and the Chevrot style body I usually make may not be appropriate for that purpose.
I asked my friend, doll artist Ed Spencer, to make a composition body for this doll. As a result, she can sit on the chair elegantly without any support . I could have used more decoration like lace and frills on the dress. However, dresses from that era seem to have a rather simple line. They used lots of fabric manipulation techniques instead. Her dress may seem too simple but there is a reason for this.
 
I also made a little hat with lots of flowers for a special occasion .This hat sits on top of her crown so that it will still show her beautiful curls.
Upon completion she turned out to be a truly one-of-a-kind doll Her new owner named her “ Miss Fancy” and she lives in her new house with lots of other friends. I know many doll collectors name their special dolls and create stories for each one as if it is a real child.
I feel very fortunate to be able to create dolls that are being loved like this by their new owners.
