It took for a while to finish the body. Thank you for waiting patiently for my new entry.      Oh,  I finally picked the head I will be using. ( I am sure everyone was curious about this part more )      I’ve decided to use the head with spiral threaded bulged dome eyes. She has the look that I wanted for my next doll to be and will go well with the fabric and dress design I picked.  I am sorry to disappoint people who wanted me to use the other head but do not worry, I will make another doll by using that head sometimes.

I stained the leather part of the body with antique finish. The shoulder plate and lower arms are bisque. Lower part of the legs are made with composition. I have not decided which wigs to use at this moment so I go ahead took pictures with both wigs. Both wigs are antique mohair wigs. Her looks changes by the wig style and the color and I will be picking the right wig as I make her costume.

*************************************************************************************************ボディーを作るのにちょっと時間がかかってしまいましたが、やっと完成しました。しかしそれよりも、どっちのヘッドを使うかに、皆さん興味津々だったのでは？　　　　　　　　　　　ドレスのデザインや作品のイメージをよく検討した結果、スパイラルスレッドアイの入ったヘッドを使うことにしました。別のヘッドを期待していた皆さん、ごめんなさい。でも、もうひとつの方は、いずれちゃんとした娘に仕上げますので、そちらの方も楽しみにしていてください。

ボディーの革の部分は、ステイン加工でアンティーク風に仕上げてあります。ショルダープレートと下腕はビスク製で、膝から下の足はコンポジション製です。　　　　　　　　　　　　ウィッグについてはどちらを使うかまだ決めていないのですが、ドレスを作りながら似合うほうを使いたいと思います。両方ともアンティークのモヘアウィッグなのですが、色とヘアスタイルによって印象がまったく違ってくるので、実際にドレスと合わせてみないと何ともいえないですね。

I have received many email from people to let me know which head they like.             Thank you so much for your input. It was very helpful !                                             　　　　I am still undecided but I go ahead started making the body.  I stuffed granulated cork in torso  today. In order to pack cork firmly, I have to push them or pound them very hard with wooden dowel. Otherwise I will end up having soft body. This is actually quite work out and I will likely to have sore arm tomorrow. Who knew doll making requires so much physical strength????

*************************************************************************************************どちらのヘッドが好きか、皆さんからたくさんのメールをいただきました。ありがとうございました。とても参考になりました。皆さんのご意見は、半分半分と言うところです。　　　　　　というわけで、まだどちらにするか決めていないのですが、とりあえずボデイー制作に取り掛かりました。今日は胴体に顆粒状のコルクを詰めました。このコルクは、木の棒でしっかり突くか押し込まないと、あのカッチリした硬いボデイーにはならないので、結構な力仕事です。やっているうちに汗をかいてきました。そして明日には腕に筋肉痛が出てくるんですよ。　　ドールメイキングってわりと力仕事が多くて、それなりの体力がないとできないことが多いです。

I just posted in my last entry that I like the head with spiral thread eye so much and I am going to use that head. BUT, when I took out head # 2 from the kiln after seventh firing and applied another set of antique eyes, my reaction was  “ OH MY GOSH, I ALSO LOVE THIS HEAD“.    So I am having dilemma now…..

The head #2 does’t have bulged eyes like the other head but she has an expression that I really like about. Sort of like ” soothing, calming effect ” looks ??? ( it’s hard to describe in English)

*************************************************************************************************前回のブログに、スパイラルアイの娘がとても気に入ったので、そのヘッドで完成品を作ろうと書きました。が、7回目のファイヤリングを終えたヘッド2号を釜から出して、別のアンテイークアイをあててみたところ、”うわ～、このヘッドもとってもツボにはまって好き”と言う結果になってしまいました。どうしましょう。。。。

ヘッド2号はスパイラルアイに比べてにドームの張り出しは少ないのですが、彼女の表情が好きなんですよね。なんというかリンとして賢そうで、でも癒し系、みたいな。

皆さんはどちらのヘッドがお好みですか?

Well, I have tried antique eyes on both heads that I was working on. It turned out that one with larger eye cut looks great with spiral thread eyes. The head with smaller eye cut still needs some adjustment with paint so she went back into kiln for 7th firing.                           I love how this head turned out so I will be making next doll by using this head with spiral thread eyes. I took some photos of the head with two different wigs. Strange thing is, her  appearance changes so much depends on the wig. She looks very young and adorable with short hair wig. On the other hand she looks more mature with darker longer hair. 　　　I have to think for a while to decide which wig I will be using because I also have to change the dress design by her looks. Mmmmm …

出来上がったヘッドに、今日はアンテイークアイを入れてみました。アイカットを大きめに作ったほうのヘッドは、スパイラルスレッドアイがぴったり合って、良い感じです。一方、小さめのアイカットのヘッドは、もう少し絵付けの調節が必要なので、7回目のファイヤリングのために釜に入りました。　大き目のアイカットのヘッドの仕上がりがなかなか良いので、このままこのヘッドを使って作品を仕上げたいと思います。一応用意していた二つのウィッグを付けて写真を撮ってみました。。。。。。。が、困ったことに、ウィッグによって雰囲気がぜんぜん違ってしまいます。ショートカットのウィッグでは、とても幼く可愛らしく見えます。ところがセミロングのアーバンのウィッグだと、けっこう大人びて見えます。さて、どうしたものか。。。。　これはしばらく両方のウィッグを見比べながら、時間を置いてどちらにするか決めなければなりません。雰囲気によって作るドレスのデザインもかなり違ってくるので、慎重に行かなければ。。。。

I think this will be the last firing for these two heads. ( I will find out tomorrow if the painting comes out okay) Can’t wait to try out antique eyes to see how they will look. Meanwhile I need to get going with body making and make decision of the dress designs. I already picked up some fabrics that I want to use for my next doll. But it will all depends on the doll’s face. If she has the look I want, the fabric I picked will be perfect for her…

*************************************************************************************************さて、これが最後の6回目のファイヤリングです。（絵付けがうまく行ったかどうかは、明日のお楽しみと言うことで。)　それにしても、早くアンテイークのグラスアイを試してみたいです。一体どんなお顔になるのか。。。そして、ボディー制作にもそろそろ取り掛からなければ。ドレスのデザインも考えなければならないし。。。布地のほうはすでに選んであります。といっても、それも出来上がる娘のお顔次第。もしも予想通りのお顔に出来上がれば、選んだ生地はイメージにぴったりのはずです。考えるだけで、なんだかウキウキです。

I painted base shape of eyebrows yesterday so I finished them with just touch up paint this time. Also added dots on inner eye corners and nostrils. And painted cheeks and added accent lip lines. It almost looks completed but I will need one more firing for final over all touch ups. If everything comes out okay from the kiln, I will set eyes in next stage and see if she has the look I want. Even if the painting looks good, I will never know if the head is usable till I set eyes. I have so many “unusable painted heads” in my junk pile box to be thrown away someday. I just can not get rid of them right away because I spent so much time and effort for each of them. 🙁   But once a year, I go through them and destroy most of them to make more rooms. I use hammer to destroy them just like braking china plates and it’s actually a good tress reliever! 🙂

昨日は眉毛のベースになる形を絵付けしたので、今日はタッチアップしただけで済みました。そのほかに、目頭と鼻の穴に点を入れて、チークも塗りました。唇にはアクセントラインも入って、ほぼ完成？と言うくらいまで来ましたが、まだもう一回最終的なタッチアップの絵付けをしなければなりません。つまり、合計6回のファイヤリングになるわけですね。　　　　絵付けが上手くいけば、次の段階ではグラスアイを入れてみます。これがまたくせ者で、絵付けが上手くいったからといってそれで良いわけではなく、グラスアイが入って予想したとおりの表情が出ているかどうかによるわけです。もし、予想通りの表情でなければ、そのヘッドは私にとってはボツになるわけです。こういう”絵付けはオッケーだけど表情がいまいちなのでボツ”というヘッドがけっこう箱に溜まるんです。でもってすぐには捨てられないんですよね。せっかくあれだけ時間をかけて作ったのに、なんだか可哀想で。。。　　　　　　　　　　で、一年ぐらい経っていよいよ使えないようであれば(この時点でもうすでに可哀想だとは思っていない)ぜんぶ割って処分します。カナヅチでガシャーン！とやるわけですが、これがまたストレス発散にはなかなか良いのです。:-)

Unlike painting lashes, painting eyebrows is very time consuming work for me.                    I have to dedicate entire day for this procedure and prepare my body in good shape to have less pain in my neck and shoulders. Sounds bit exaggerated but it’s true.                   If I can not paint eyebrows right, all the effort I put in till this day to make these heads will be totally wasted.

I spent all morning painting eye brows. Then check them in few hours to see if they look okay. Human eyes and brain do little tricks on you, the moment I am painting, these eyebrows look great and well balanced. But when I check them again later on, I can start seeing all kinds of mistakes I made. So I will start all over again till I get them right. Once they are fired I can not fix anymore so I will take as much as time I need till I satisfy.         By the end of the day, my neck and shoulders are hard as rock from all the stress and sitting for long hours. But my fruit of labor, two heads are in kiln now and I hope the painting will come out okay after being fired.                                                                            I will never know it till I open the lid tomorrow ….

*************************************************************************************************睫毛の時と違って、眉毛の絵付けはとても時間のかかる作業です。　　　　　　　　　　まずこの日のために丸一日何もスケジュールを入れず、肩と首の痛みが少なくなるように事前に体調を調節しておかなければなりません。なんだか大げさですが、眉毛描きはそのくらい私にとって重大事です。これが上手くいかなければ次の段階に進めないばかりか、変な眉毛を描けば今までの苦労がすべて水の泡になってしまうからです。

午前中はまず、ひたすら眉毛描きに専念します。そして午後にまたチェックを入れます。　　人間の目と脳は不思議なもので、描いている時点ではとてもよくできたように見えます。でも数時間後にチェックを入れてみるといろんな欠点が見え始めます。で、またやり直し。　　　納得するものができるまでこれを繰り返すわけです。いったん釜に入れてしまうと、もう絵付けを直すことはできないので、眉毛だけはいくらでも時間をかけてやり直します。　　　　　おかげで夕方には肩と首がガチガチです。さて、二つのヘッドが釜に入りました。でも、絵付けがきれいに焼けるかどうかは、明日また釜を開けてみないとわかりません。　　　　　　まだまだストレスは続く。。。

This time I painted lower lashes and eye shadow over upper eye lid , added more color on lips and painted dots on nostrils. The reason I painted upper lashes at last firing is so that I can put on some eye shadows during this stage.  ( I can add layers of paint only after previous layer was being fired.)   Eye shadow looks very red before goes into kiln but the red color tones down once it’s fired.

************************************************************************************************　3回目の絵付けでは、上まぶたにアイシャドーを入れ、下まつげを描きました。それと唇にもう少し色を重ね、鼻の穴に色をつけました。前回上まつ毛を描いたので、今回はその上にアイシャドーを塗ることができます。ビスクに色を重ねる場合は、前回塗った部分を焼いて色を固定させてからでないと不可能です。今までいろんな順序で絵付けを試してみましたが、このやり方が私には一番合っているようです。釜入れする前のアイシャドーは、とても赤みが強く見えますが、焼いた後は赤色のトーンが落ちてちょうど良い感じになります。

I am glad this did not happen to my bisque head but when I painted skin tone on bisque arms, I found unwanted line on one arm after being fired. It did not show up during painting but they appear after firing. Very disappointing. I have to cast another set of arms.                               Another small set back…. 🙁

*************************************************************************************************これがビスクヘッドに出なかったのが不幸中の幸いですが、前回一緒に肌色の絵付けをしたビスクアームに線が入ってしまいました。絵付けの最中には出ないのですが、焼いた後にくっきり現れたりするから厄介です。またビスクアームの型抜きをしなければ、、とほほです。

I am sure each doll artist has their own routine to paint doll heads. I happen to start with upper lashes and base shape of lips at second firing. It use to take many hours to just paint one side of lashes but now I am much faster. ( Thanks goodness )                              I try not to paint lashes too neatly anymore because antique doll’s lashes are not done too neatly either. I don’t mind some irregular thickness or space between each lashes.          　I will be painting lower lashes and more colors on lips at next firing.

*************************************************************************************************作家さんによって、絵付けの手順はそれぞれ違うと思いますが、私は二回目の絵付けでは上睫と、唇のベース描きから始めます。昔は睫を描くのに何時間もかかりましたが、今はもっと早くできるようになりました。もっとも、睫はあまりきっちり描かないようにしているので、サイズや間隔に多少ムラがあっても良しとしています。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　次の段階では、下睫と、さらに唇に色をつけていきます。

Third time’s a charm! I think I finally made bisque head without flaw and correct eye cut.      I painted white bisque with very pink skin tone and it will go into kiln for the first China firing.          I use to paint my Brus with sort of paler skin tone because that’s how everyone requested. Now I tend to paint in much stronger pink. If you look at antique Bru dolls, that’s how they were painted. I also painted smaller eye cut head. It seems other antique eyes may fit okay with this head. I will work on both heads but using different eyes and will see which one would look better.

************************************************************************************************三度目の正直!(でしたっけ？）やっとビスクに問題がなくてアイカットもオッケーなヘッドができました。さっそくピンクの肌色の絵付けをして一回目の絵付けの釜入れです。　同時に先日アイカットが小さすぎたヘッドも絵付けしていきます。もしかしたら、もうひとつのアンテイークアイが合うかもしれないので。以前はお客様のご要望で、肌色はわりと色白に塗っていましたが、今回はかなり濃いピンクです。アンテイークのBruをご覧になった方はわかるとも思いますが、アンテイークのBruはわりと濃い目の肌色に塗られています。なので、私もそれになるたけ近い色合いで仕上げる予定です。二つのヘッド同時進行はできるかどうかわかりませんが、どちらか出来のいい方を使って、最終的な作品に仕上げたいと思います。

By the way, porcelain greenware shrinks around 15 % after bisque fired.Therefore it’s hard to estimate if  eye opening is right size or not during cleaning stage. I just guesstimate and make eye cut slightly larger than actual glass eyes. If they fit perfectly after bisque fired,you can imagine how excited I am!

焼成した後のポーセリンはグリーンウェアの時と比べて15％ぐらい縮みます。なので、クリーニングをしている時点で、アイカットが正しい大きさかどうかを計るのはちょっと面倒です。　私の場合はカンでこれくらいかな、とアタリをつけて、グラスアイより少しだけ大きめにカットします。ですので焼成後上手くグラスアイがフィットする時の喜びは、ひとしおです。　　　　(ああ、なんだかおおざっぱですね。。。）
