Two Circle Dot Bru dolls

 Last April I made my first Circle Dot Bru doll using the wrong head mold. I finally purchased a correct mold from the Virginia LaVorgna Company and have made a French Circle Dot Bru doll.
 Not just one, but I made two dolls to show this time. One has brown eyes and the other one has blue eyes.
 
As you can see in the photos these two dolls have very different faces. The brown-eyed Bru has smaller irises with pale skin, which was requested by my customer in order to capture the authentic look of an antique Circle Dot Bru. I had a wonderful opportunity to study the look of an antique Circle Dot Bru during the UFDC convention last month, and I think this brown-eyed Bru came out pretty close to having that antique look.
 
I have noticed Circle Dot Bru dolls seem to have two kinds of faces. One has smaller irises with a more mature look just like this brown-eyed Bru I made, and the other kind has larger irises with a baby-like face. I tried to give a look of “ baby face” to this blue- eyed Circle Dot Bru. Her irises are larger, almost filling up the entire eye holes, and her pink skin seems to emphasize her chubby cheeks. They look almost like two different dolls made from different molds, but they were actually made from the same mold. It’s very interesting how you can change the look of each doll by changing the color of the skin and using different eyes.
 
Their bodies are Bru style leather body with leather legs. I have stained the body to give an aged look.
 I also used “claw like ” Bru hands for this doll. They are different from the Bru hands that are used for Bru Jne dolls.
 Antique Bervete and Circle Dot Bru often have these “claw like” finger hands. Later model Bru Jne dolls have more delicately sculptured hands that Bru dolls are famous for.
 I have been making Bru dolls for quite some times but this is the first time I made a Circle Dot Bru. Because for a long time I wasn’t a very big fan of this model..
 But once I started learning more about them, I discovered their beauty and how irresistible they can be.
 
I will definitely try to make more Circle Dot Bru dolls to show how beautiful and cute they are!

４月に間違ったモールドでサークルドットブリュを作って以来、正しいモールドで作り直すのが当面の課題となっていましたが、今回やっと完成しました。
 しかも２体。茶目とブルーアイの娘たちです。
 
モールドは、バージニア　ラボーニャ社の１８インチサークルドットブリュを使いました。
 画像でわかるように、この二人は一件まったく違った顔をしています。
 茶目の娘は虹彩が小さめで色白、お客様のリクエストでなるたけアンティークっぽいお顔に仕上げました。
 
先月行ったＵＦＤＣのコンベンションで、何体のアンティークサークルドットブリュを見る機会がありましたが、この茶目の娘はけっこうアンテイークに近い雰囲気に仕上がったと思います。
 
サークルドットブリュには虹彩が小さめな大人顔の娘と、虹彩が大きめの赤ちゃんっぽい顔がありますが、ブルーアイの娘はその赤ちゃん顔をめざして作ってみました。
 アイホールの半分以上を占める虹彩と、ピンク色の肌色がぽっちゃりした頬をさらに強調して、かなり幼顔に見えます。
 この二つのヘッドはまったく違った顔つきですが、両方同じモールドからできています。
 
同じモールドを使っても、グラスアイと絵付けの仕方を変えるだけで、いろんなバリエーションが楽しめます。
 
ボディーは、レザーレッグのブリューボディーです。古く見えるよう、レザーにアンティーク加工してあります。
 ビスクハンドは、初期のブレベテやサークルドットブリュに使われた”クローハンド”を使いました。ブリュジュンのリアルな彫りのビスクハンドに比べて、この初期のクローハンドは指の動きが多少簡略化した感じです。
 
いままで長い間ブリュを作ってきましたが、サークルドットは今回はじめて作りました。と言うのも、じつはサークルドットははじめはあまり好きじゃなかったんです。
 でも、この何ヶ月かいろいろ勉強してるうちにだんだんその良さがわかってきて、いまではけっこうハマってしまいました。
 
これを機会に今後も、もっともっと魅力的なサークルドットをたくさん作っていけたらと思います。
 
 
 
 

2011 UFDC Convention in Anaheim

Attending UFDC annual convention was a very exciting and educational experience.

The president of UFDC described the convention itself as a museum of dolls and it was true.

I was able to see many rare dolls that I have only seen in books and on the internet. I have two particular Bru dolls that I call ” my dream Brus”. I was hoping to make Bru dolls look like them, and that is one of my ultimate goals.

Well, what do you know ! They were both there at the competitive exhibit table side by side. I was almost in tears when I saw them. I could have stayed there forever! Not only were they 100 times more beautiful than pictures, they looked so life-like. Many doll collectors use expressions like ” I want a doll that speaks to me.” And they were speaking to me for sure ! Unfortunately, I will never be able to own them, but at least I can try to make dolls that look like them someday.I am sure many other doll artists were inspired just as I was by seeing all these wonderful dolls. This part alone was worth coming to the convention.

But that was just one part. Meeting with other fellow doll enthusiasts was perhaps the best reason for going there.I was able to meet other doll artists who have exchanged email with me a few times in the past. We quickly became good friends as if we had known each other for a long time. It’s always nice to be able to talk about technical issues with someone who knows what you’re doing. I don’t usually have that opportunity since I do doll-making alone at home.Sometime it makes me feel like I am the only one struggling, but I found out that other artists go through a similar struggle.

I also took a few seminars and workshops, learning so much more about dolls. The most eye-opening experience was taking a refresher course in Japanese history as seen through Japanese doll culture presented by Alan Scott Pate. Alan has published many books about antique Japanese dolls, and he is one of the most well known antique Japanese doll experts in the U. S..

I must say Japanese history classes I took when I was in school were very boring. They did not stay in my memory very well.
But Alan’s lecture was full of interesting stories to help me understand history in a fun way. It was three hours long but the time went by so fast. His seminar is simply very enjoyable. I would recommend it for anyone who has a chance to attend.
 Last but not least, we all received a souvenir doll at the banquet on the last day. This year’s doll is an all bisque doll created by Darlene Lane. The doll’s name is Aimee, and she is so tiny and adorable. She is only 5.5 inches tall but the details of her facial painting are incredible. To paint such a tiny doll with perfection is already hard enough, but Darlene hand made more than 1000 of this same doll for the convention. I can’t even imagine doing that much work myself. This was the moment I truly appreciated doll artists. I can see how much work she put into each doll, and she did not cut corners in any details.Thank you, Darlene.
 The Halopeau doll that I made for this convention was sold, and I appreciate everyone who came to see my doll during the convention. I received many compliments and met a few of my customers there. It’s always nice to know who I am doing business with since I rarely have a chance to meet them. Next year’s convention will be held in New Orleans. I hope I will be able to go there and again have another exciting time!

アナハイムでのＵＦＤＣのコンベンションから帰ってきました。とても勉強になった有意義な時間を過ごすことができました。
オープニングセレモニーで会長さんが、”このコンベンション自体がドールミュージアムと呼べるほど、素晴らしいドールの数々が集まっています”と言っていましたが、まさにそのとおりでした。
本やネットでしか見たことのないレアなドールが、それこそ盛りだくさんに展示されていました。
私が密かに”ドリームＢｒｕ”と呼ぶ、本でしか見たことの無いアンテイークのＢｒｕがあるのですが、なんとその二人が、コンペティションのテーブルに並んで飾られていたのです。
まさかこうして実物に会えるとは夢にも思っていなかったので、もう嬉しくて涙が出るほど。もちろん実物は写真より１００倍もよかったですが、それより何より、まるで生きているかのような素晴らしい表情なのには感激しました。よくコレクターの人は”自分に語りかけてくるお人形が欲しい”といいますが、冗談ではなく、ほんとに語りかけているようだったんですよ。
でもまあそこは現実にもどって、彼女たちはコレクターさんの秘蔵なので私がいくらがんばっても手の届かない存在です。せめて、いつか彼女たちに少しでも近いレプリカを作れたらいいと思っています。

 これだけでもコンベンションに出席した甲斐がありましたが、同じようにお人形を愛するたくさんのお友達にお会いできたのが一番の収穫でした。メールでしか面識のなかったドールアーティストの皆さんにもお会いすることができました。やっぱりお互いの苦労話などを時間を忘れて話し合える機会をもてるのは嬉しいですね。特に私は家で一人ドールメーキングをやっていて、他の作家さんに会う機会がまったく無いので、とても貴重な過ごすことができました。
他にもセミナーやワークショップに参加したりで、とても忙しいスケジュールでした。中でも一番興味深かったのが、アランさんによる日本の人形文化の講演を通して日本史を今一度理解できたことです。

私は日本史はあまり得意ではなかったので、大まかな部分は知っていますが細かいところはぜんぜん覚えてませんでした。アランさんはアメリカでも指折りの日本人形の専門家で、本もいくつか出版しているだけあってその知識は素晴らしいものです。日本の歴史を、英語でしかもアメリカ人講師によってこんなによく理解できたのには、われながら目からうろこが落ちる思いでした。しかも、彼の講義はとてもスピードがあるうえ楽しいエピソードが盛りだくさんで、３時間という長い講義があっという間に終わってしまいました。

アランさんは年に４回日本へ買い付けに行くそうなので、もし機会があったらぜひ彼のセミナーへ参加してみる事をお勧めします。ほんと、楽しいですよ。彼自身も、とても面白い方です。

コンベンション最終日のディナーパーティーでは、お土産のアーティストドールが手渡されました。今年はリプロ作家のダーリーン.レーンさんによるジャーマンのミニョネット”エイミー”です。エイミーは５．５インチしかないちいさな娘ですが、繊細な絵付けの素晴らしさに感動しました。こんな小さなヘッドに繊細な絵付けを施すことができるだけでもすごいことなのに、彼女は同じ人形を１０００体以上手作りしたのですから、その仕事量を考えただけで気が遠くなります。一体作るのにどれだけの手間がかかったのがわかるだけに、こういうプレゼントはとてもありがたく思いますね。ダーリーンさん、ありがとうございました。

さて、セールスルームに展示されたアッシュは、おかげさまで新しいお家が決まりました。

わざわざ足を運んでくださった方々にお礼を申しあげます。たくさんの方々に、私の作品を見ていただくことができて嬉しいです。メールでしか連絡を取ったことのないお客様にも、実際にお会いすることができました。これもまた、私にとってはとても貴重な体験です。

来年のコンベンションはニューオーリンズだそうです。また来年も行けるといいですが。。。

 



 
 

 

 

Halopeau doll completed!

Gee, I finally finished making my first complete Halopeau doll to take to the UFDC convention.

And here she is!

I have made quite a few H heads recently but never had a chance to make a complete doll.
Most of the dolls I have been making are custom dolls. In other words, I don’t decide the dress or details of the dolls.

They are all requested by the customer. This H doll was created by ” however I want” style.I have been wanting to make a dress with this design for a long time, and I have been saving this antique sage green fabric just for this dress.
I am very happy that I was finally able to use it.
It turned out very chic and I really love it! Even though I had only a very little time to make this dress, I hand stitched all cording trims and used lots of fabric manipulation techniques.
Edging trim at the bottom of the jacket is made with silver thread. It’s very heavy and has a nice antique patina which adds another layer of richness to the dress.
While I was making this head, I had a once in a lifetime opportunity to study an antique AT doll in my house.
One of my customers offered me the use of her antique AT doll as a painting guide to make an H head for her, and she actually let me keep the doll for a month.
I had an antique AT doll side by side to paint this H head ( and my customer’s) to capture the true coloring of skin tone, feathered brows, lip shade, etc …
How lucky can I be!
As a result, I think she greatly resembles an AT doll.
I am taking her to the UFDC national convention this Saturday.
She will be available in the sales room at Teri’s Antique Dolls booth.
I look forward to meeting new friends there!

予定よりちょっと早めにアッシュが完成しました。
最近たくさんのアッシュのヘッドを作っていましたが、ドレスを含めた完成品を作るのは今回が初めてです。
私が作っているほとんどの作品はカスタムオーダーのため、ドレスや絵付けは全部お客様からのリクエストを生かして作られています。
なので、今回の作品は全部私の好みで作った物となります.
 
ずっと前からこのデザインのドレスを作ってみたくて、しかも、このドレスのためにわざわざこのセイジグリーンのアンテイーク地までずーっと取っておいたのです。
やっと使える機会が持てて嬉しいです。
出来上がりはかなりシックなイメージですが、実はとても好みです。
製作期間が短いため時間に余裕が無く、かなり無理してドレス製作をしてましたが、手抜きはせずにちゃんと模様のコーディングも手縫いしたし、いろんなギャザーとか、プリーツとかつけました。
ジャケットの裾と胸の飾りにあるエッジングトリムは銀糸でできていて、とても重く、しかもアンティーク特有の変色もしていて、良い雰囲気を出しています。
 しかもこのヘッドを製作中にすごいことがありました。
別のお客様からＨヘッドの製作依頼も受けていたのですが、なんと、お客様が持っているアンティークのＡＴを参考に絵付けして欲しいとの依頼で(ここまでは普通）、写真では実際の色がわからないだろうからと、本物を送ってきたのです。
アンティークのＡＴを傍らに絵付けの勉強をさせていただくなんて、たぶんあと一生無いだろうな、と言うくらい素晴らしい体験でした。
おかげで、このアッシュはなんだかＡＴに似た顔つきになりました。
 前回のブログでお伝えしたとおり、この娘は２５日から開催されるＵＦＤＣのコンベンションにて、展示販売されます。
私も初めての参加なので、たくさんの新しいお友達に会えることを楽しみにしています。

 

 

 

Noble Dolls by Vita Soyka

I wrote about Japanese Ichimastu dolls in my last blog.

This time I would like to introduce another kind of wonderful doll created by my friend Vita Soyka who is an extremely talented doll artist from Ukraine.

Her dolls are inspired by early European wooden dolls from 17th ~18th centuries, but they are all her original designs, not reproductions.

She hand carves lime – wood to make the base of a wooden doll then coats the wood with a chalk priming mixture. She finishes the facial painting with an old method of egg tempera and sets glass eyes to give life to the doll.
 Vita hand sews all garments and dresses for the dolls by using a combination of modern and antique materials.
Oftentimes antique fabrics are too fragile to handle and choices are very limited. But by combining both new and old materials Vita has the flexibility to create a wide variety of dresses.
She carefully chooses fabrics made from natural materials in order to preserve the integrity of a vintage look to her dolls.
To make that vintage look even more authentic, she uses antique glass eyes,and the wigs are made from antique human hair .
 
I was just blown away when I first saw her dolls because of their artistry.
Compared to using molds to make porcelain dolls, hand carving each doll is extremely time consuming and requires a high level of artistic skill. I am already taking my hat off at that point.
 
My dolls are my own interpretation of antique dolls but still ” reproductions”.
Vita’s dolls are all originals made from scratch. I truly envy her talent and thank her for giving me an opportunity to learn something new.

Miss Wakayama ~ Japanese Friendship Doll ~

Our local doll club took a field trip to the Nevada Historical Society in early June to visit ” Miss Wakayama ~ Japanese Friendship Doll”.
Japanese Friendship dolls ~Torei Ningyo~ are a type of Ichimatsu dolls which were sent to US from Japan in 1927 to show gratitude for the Blue – Eyed dolls that were sent to Japanese children from US in early 1927.
Originally 58 Ichimatsu dolls were sent and each of the dolls were equipped with a variety of accessories including lacquer chests,silk parasols, lanterns,passports,steamship tickets and goodwill letters.
Unfortunately some of them were lost or misplaced over the years especially during WWII. Forty six of them are known to exist as of today.
 The Nevada Historical Society in Reno received one of the Friendship dolls, Miss Wakayama, in 1928. After they toured around cities of US, she has been on permanent display at the museum.
I was born and raised in Japan but I knew very little about Ichimatsu dolls and had no knowledge about Friendship dolls until one of my doll club members mentioned about them.
Since then I did more research and discover the beauty and wonderful history of Ichimatsu dolls. Now I truly appreciate the fact that we have one of this friendship doll in town and being able to see the doll with such a remarkable history.
The moment I saw her, I could only say “Wow”. Our Miss Wakayama is about 30 inches tall and she is displayed with her beautiful accessories such as lacquer chests, tea ceremony set, slippers and umbrella.
Her facial painting is a work of art. She has eye lashes and two rows of teeth with open mouth which is kind of rare among Friendship dolls.
She has this divine smile which looks almost like a real child, as if you can hear her breathing. It is a true master artist’s work to create such “look”.
Her silk kimono has clam patterns at the bottom which is original to her. Each Friendship doll has a name to represent each prefecture in Japan, and Wakayama prefecture is known for clam harvesting.
I believe that’s where her kimono patterns originated.
She is still missing some of her belongings because many Friendship dolls and their belongings did not travel together during the tour after they arrived in US.
The Historical Society director told us that they are still trying to locate some of her original belongings including her passport.
There are 45 more Friendship dolls located all over the US. One of them, Miss Japan, is in the Smithsonian Museum.

I would definitely recommend going to see a Friendship doll if you have one nearby.

先日地元のドールクラブのメンバーで、市内にあるネバダ歴史美術館へ”答礼人形”の見学ツアーに行ってきました。
答礼人形、別名フレンドシップドールは、１９２７年にアメリカから日本の子供たちへ送られた青い目の人形のお礼にと、日本からアメリカへ渡った市松人形のことです。
当時５８体の市松人形が政府発行のパスポートを持って、漆塗りの家具やぼんぼり、日本傘などのお嫁入り道具とともに海を渡ってきました。
ところが第二次世界大戦中、敵国の人形と言うことで展示からはずされてしまった多くの答礼人形は、その後消息がわからなくなり、現在４６体が確認されているだけです。
ネバダ歴史美術館は、１９２８年頃にアメリカ国内の展示ツアーを終えた答礼人形の一体”ミス和歌山”を授かっています。
私は日本人のくせに、実は市松人形についてはあまり知識がないのです。ましてや答礼人形のことなど、アメリカ人のドールクラブの友達から話しを聞くまで知りませんでした。
そこでさっそくいろいろリサーチをして、市松人形の古い歴史と、その芸術性の素晴らしさを知りました。
このような素晴らしい歴史を持つ市松人形に会えるなんて、（しかも同じ市内にいるなんて）当日までとてもわくわくしていました。
そしてご対面の瞬間は、まさに”わお”でした。
ミス和歌山は背たけがおよそ３０インチもあって、漆の箪笥やお茶の道具などともにジャジャーンと飾られていました。
お顔の絵付けはとても素晴らしく、まさに芸術品の域です。まつ毛もしっかりついていて、答礼人形の中では珍しくオープンマウスです。そしてそのかわいらしい口元からは上下に並んだ歯が見えます。
神々しいくらいの微笑をたたえたお顔からは、まるで生きているかのようなオーラさえ感じられました。
お着物はかわいらしいピンク色で、貝の模様が手描きされています。
答礼人形のひとりひとりには、出身地の都道府県の名前がついていますが、和歌山県は潮干狩りができる浜があることからこの模様がついたのでしょうか。。。
彼女の何点かのお嫁入り道具は、まだ全部見つからないでいます。
これは、答礼人形がアメリカ国内をツアーした際に、持ち物とお人形がごちゃ混ぜになって移動されたためです。
美術館長は、パスポートを含めた彼女のお嫁入り道具を現在も捜索中だと話してくれました。
他にも４５体の答礼人形がアメリカ国内に存在します。そのうちのひとつ”ミス日本”は、ワシントンＤＣのスミソニアン美術館に保管されています。

My miracle baby, 16 inch Bru Jne 6 doll

I started working on this doll in early March. It was an order from a Japanese doll collector.
The order was to use a Bru Jne 6 mold to recreate an antique Bru wearing a beautiful ecru dress with intricate design.
I was very excited but at the same time I was facing a challenge to recreate a certain “look” with this mold.
 
Then the earthquake and tsunami disaster hit Japan.
 After I confirmed the safety of my family and friends in Japan, I became very worried if my customer in Japan was okay.
Fortunately, I was able to communicate with her and found that she was safe. But her area was also affected by earthquakes and was suffering from after shocks every day, forcing the people to live inconvenient lives .
I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea for us to continue working on this doll at a time when everyone in Japan was suffering.
I was also in shock for a few days. There was no way I could work on dolls.
It was a struggle for my customer to make a decision too. But she wanted me to finish making this doll because that would give her hope during a chaotic time and it would give her something to look forward to hoping Japan would be back to normal by the time the doll was completed.
 
I am not able to concentrate on painting a doll head if I am under stress. It causes too much pain in my neck and shoulders and I know I won’t be able to paint well.
I was very emotional for a few weeks after the earthquakes. Being tearful all the time, I was not able to concentrate or do anything.
But I couldn’t just be crying and depressed forever. I had to find ways to get out of this horrible situation. I decided to work on things I could do to help the people in Japan.
That would be making dolls!
The Bru Jne 6 mold I have is very tricky to work on from the beginning. If I don’t make eye cut and paint lips right, it comes out * awful * .
Even in normal circumstances I still have to make a few heads to come up with one satisfactory head. Working on this mold when I am an emotional “mess” was not easy.
So I don’t know what I did right to make everything work out, but she came out nearly ” perfect” when I set her eyes.
 
If there is a ” Doll making God” out there, he must have worked a miracle on me.
 Some of you may have noticed that her dress does not have any lace like my other doll dresses.
I love this kind of tailored simple and elegant dress. Instead of using lace or other decorations, it requires many fabric manipulation techniques which you often see on antique dresses from the 19th century.
Lots of piping and pleating and ruffling etc … all these manipulation techniques have to be done by hand stitching.
In other words, it requires many, many hours of sewing.
 
We have an old tradition in Japan of making one thousand paper cranes to wish someone’s recovery when they are ill or to give a soldier who is leaving for battle a piece of fabric with one thousand needle stitches wishing his safe return. I don’t know if I made one thousand stitches on this dress but I did put in lots of hope and love while I was making it.
She turned out much more beautiful than I had hoped for.
I am very proud that she is going to Japan to make someone happy.
After all, we love dolls because they make us ” happy” and give us “comfort”. This is universal no matter how old you are or where you live….

この作品の製作にかかったのは、３月の初めでした。日本のコレクターの方からのオーダーです。
エクリュ色の手の凝った素晴らしいドレスを着たアンティークＢｒｕを、BruJne６のモールドを使って再現する、ということでお受けしました。
もともと、いつか作ってみたいと思っていた作品だったので、製作にかかるのをとても楽しみしていたのですが、持っているBruJne６のモールドで上手く”あの表情”が出せるかちょっと心配でした。
 
そんなおり、あの大震災が起こったのです。
震災直後は、日本の家族と友達の安否を確認するのが精一杯でしたが、一息着いたところで　”そういえば、オーダーをくださったお客様は大丈夫だろうか？”と、とても心配になりました。
幸いその方とも連絡が取れ、ご無事なことが確認できましたが、毎日続く余震と、不便な生活を強いられ、不安な日々を送っていられるようでした。
日本中の皆さんが災害の影響で苦しんでいられる中、果たしてこのまま作品の製作を続けることは正しいことなんだろうかと疑問に思いました。
私自身震災後数日は、ショック状態でほとんど何も手がつかず、とてもドール製作にかかれるような状況ではありませんでした。
お客様のほうでも結論を出すのに苦悩されたようですが、最終的にはこのまま製作を続けてください、というお返事をいただきました。
このような厳しい状況の中で、せめて何ヵ月後に完成する作品を思うだけで希望が持てる、作品が完成するころには、きっと平和な日本に戻っていることを祈って、という切実な思いがこめられていました。
 
普段私は、ストレスが溜まっているときは絵付けが上手くできません。ストレスが首と肩の痛みをさらにひどくして、とても仕事に取り掛かれるような状態ではないのです。
しかも震災後数週間はとても涙もろくなっていて、仕事中でもやたらポロポロしてしまうので集中できません。
しかし、いつまでもそんなことを言っていてはらちが明かないですし、なんとかしてこの悪循環を断ち切らなくてはと思い、今自分にできることは何かをよく考えてみました。
やっぱりそれは、作品を作り続けること、ですよね。
 
私が持っているBruJne６のモールドはちょっと癖があって、アイカットや唇の絵付けが上手くできないと、ものすごく”変”なお顔になります。
普段でもかなりの数の”練習用”ヘッドを経て、やっと最終的な”完成品”ができるのですが、この娘はなんと、眼を入れたとたんにほぼ、パーフェクトな仕上がりになりました。
もしもドールメイキングの神様がいるとすれば、きっと今回私に何かのおまじないをかけてくれたかのようです。
 
さて、皆さんはもうお気づきかもしれませんが、今回のドレスにはレースは一切使われていません。
こういう手の凝った、でもシンプルでエレガントなドレスが、実はとても好きです。レースや他の飾り物がいろいろ付いたドレスと違い、多くの１９世紀に作られたドレスがそうであるように、布そのものにいろいろな細工が施されています。プリーツやギャザー、パイピングなどなど、どれも手縫いで作らなければならないものばかりです。つまり、裁縫にいつもの倍以上の時間がかかるわけです。
日本には、千羽鶴を作ったり、千人針をお守りとして持たせるなどの古い習慣があります。さて、このドレスを作るにあたって私が千本の縫い目を作ったかどうかはわかりませんが、たくさんの”希望”と、”愛情”をこめて縫い上げたのは確かです。
おかげで、思った以上に素晴らしい娘が出来上がりました。この娘が日本へ行って、一人でも多くの人々に”笑顔”を与えてくれることを願っています。
私達がお人形を好きな理由は、見ていて”幸せ”な気持ちにしてくれること、”安らぎ”を与えてくれることにあると思います。
この気持ちは、いくつになっても、どの国へ行っても変わらない、普遍的なものです。
 
 

Stop taking new orders

I have posted on my FAQ section that waiting period of custom order doll is 6 months to one year.
Due to recent increase of requests, my custom order is currently booked for 2 years, up to summer of 2013.
I appreciate that many people are interested in my doll but I am afraid I have to stop taking new orders for a while.
My current life style between nursing work and doll making is becoming bit more than I can handle.
Also I am not comfortable making promise for more than two years ahead.
I apologize to people who are thinking about placing orders in future.
I may resume taking custom orders someday but I am not sure at this time.
I will post it on my blog when I decide to take orders again.
I will continue posting my new dolls on my website till I finish my current orders. I can take some of head only orders when I have time but I can not take dress only orders or body only orders.

 ＦＡＱのページで、カスタムオーダーでお待ちいただく期間は６ヶ月から１年と記載してありますが、

Brevete head on Bebe Modele body

I received these photos from my customer and I would like to share with everyone to show her rare body.

The doll head is a Bebe Brevete that I made and it is attached to an antique Babe Modele body.

The earliest face of Bebe Modele used a Bebe Brevete head and that’s what the owner was looking for .
This rare wooden body has an elaborate articulation and you can pose it almost like a real human body which a Chevrot body or kid body cannot.
Antique Modele body was offered in several different sizes and this particular body is 12 inches tall, a perfect fit for a reproduction Brevete head.
The finished doll size is approx. 17 inches.
I am very excited to see my doll head on such a rare antique body. This is such an honor!

I do get many requests to make a doll head to fit on an antique body.

As long as I have the correct size head mold to fit on the body, I can make the doll head per request.

But please inquire for the head size and type of mold I have first before you purchase this expensive antique body.
Certain doll heads only come in limited sizes and may not match the size of the antique body.

私の作ったブレベテのヘッドを、アンティークのべべモデーレボディーにつけていただきました。
初期のべべモデーレはブレベテのヘッドを使っていたようですが、それをモデルに作りました。
モデーレボディーはとても稀少で、なかなかお目にかかることはできません。
この全身が木でできたボディーはシェブローボディーやキッドボディーと違って、いろんな形にポーズをとることができます。
コンポジションボディーよりもさらに間接の稼動域は広いようです。ちょうど現代のボールジョイントボディーみたいですね。
でも１３０年も前にこんな高い技術を持っていたなんて、さすがフレンチドールメーカーの技術は素晴らしいものです。
モデーレボディーには何種類かのサイズがありますが、このボディーは１２インチです。ヘッドとあわせるとだいたい１７インチほど。
私のリプロヘッドを、このような素晴らしいアンティークボディーにつけていただいてとても光栄です。
ほかにもよく、アンティークボディー用のヘッドの依頼を受けますが、ボディーのサイズに合うヘッドがあればお受けしています。
ただモールドによっては限られたサイズしか入手できないものもあるので、お値段の高いアンティークボディーをご購入される前に一度お問い合わせください。
この娘はたまたまヘッドとボディーが上手くマッチしたいい例です。
 
 
 

14 inch Bru Jne 4 with an antique kid body

My newest cabinet size Bru Jne 4 is very special.
She has an antique Bru kid body. I made the head, shoulder plate, arms and dress to make a complete doll.
While most of my Bru Jne dolls have Chevrot style bodies with composition legs, this kid body has very chunky leather legs which you often see on early antique Bru Jne dolls made by Leon Casimir Bru.
The Chevrot style body has a very narrow waist—-perfect to fit a dress intended for the narrow waist. It would be very difficult to fit this kind of dress with a kid body since the kid body does not have a narrow waist.

 I always thought drop-waist Bru style dresses look perfect on this kind of chunky leather body, so I made this one by using aqua-blue antique silk velvet.

I often use heavy, embroidered antique lace to lay over a skirt or for a collar. This time I carefully chose light weight antique cotton lace for her dress because of the size of the doll.
She is a petite 14 inches tall: heavy cotton would be too much and overpower the velvet fabric.
I wanted the velvet fabric to stand out more than the lace, so I had to find light weight lace for a better balance. Still, the lace has delicate patterns so that it doesn’t look too simple or too cheap.
I also pleated the lace I used in the collar to give it more detail. Choosing the right lace and fabric takes a great deal of time when I make dresses.
Sometimes I spend more time picking lace and fabric than l spend sewing: I believe spending time planning makes a huge difference in the final appearance.

 The Bru Jne 4 mold has an adorable child-like facial expression compared to larger sized Bru molds. This kid body with chunky legs makes her a very cute and adorable little girl.

If you like cabinet-size dolls, she would be hard to resist.
Although I usually like larger dolls, I can’t keep my eyes off of this little girl. She is just so adorable!
In order to show the relative size of each doll, I’ve provided photos showing the 30 inch Bru Jne 14 holding the 14 inch Bru.
I hope people can see how petite she is even though she has the detail of larger dolls.

今回ご紹介するキャビネとサイズのＢｒｕＪｎｅ４は、実はとても特別です。

アンティークのＢｒｕキッドボディーが手に入ったので、私がヘッドとショルダープレート、腕を製作し、ドレスを作って完成させました。
私が作るＢｒｕのほとんどには、足がコンポジションのシェブローボディーを作っていますが、この娘は足がレザーでできている（いわゆるサリーちゃん足）タイプで、
レオン.カシミア.ブリュー時代の初期のＢｒｕＪｎｅに良く見られるタイプです。
シェブローボディーはウエストが細いので、ウェストラインがスリムなドレスがとてもよく似合います。
でも、ウエストが太いキッドボディーには、そのスタイルはちょっと無理なんですね。
やはりドロップウエストのＢｒｕドレスが一番良く似合います。なので今回は、アクアブルーのアンティークシルクベルベットを使ったドロップウエストドレスを作りました。
いつもは、スカートの上にかぶせるレースや襟に使うレースは刺繍が凝った厚い物を選んで使っていますが、この娘は小さいサイズなので厚いレースでは重すぎてベルベットとのバランスが上手く取れません。
このドレスはレースではなくベルベットに目がいくようにしたいので、”薄くてベルベットを威圧しない”、でも”パターンが凝っていて見た目が安っぽくない”レースを慎重に選びました。
襟にはプリーツを効かせて、薄手でも凝っている雰囲気に。レースを選ぶときはメインの布地とのバランスがとても大切なので、選ぶだけでもいつもかなり時間がかかります。
仮縫いの時点でいいなと思っても、実際にリボンや他の装飾と合わせるとぜんぜんだめだったり。縫う作業より、生地やレース選びをしている時間のほうが長かったりすることもしばしばです。
でも、こういった目に見えない部分に十分に時間をかける作業が、じつは最終的な出来上がりに大きな影響を与えます。
ある小説家が言っていましたが、”一週間で仕上げた作品はそれだけの内容でしかなく、読む人にもそれは伝わってしまう。”　これはまさにドールメイキングにも当てはまるなと思いました。
手抜きをしてささっと仕上げた作品は、やはり奥行きが無くすぐ飽きられてしまうように思えます。
細部までこだわって作った手の込んだ作品には、いくら年月が過ぎても飽きない独特の”味”があると思うんです。
そういった作品が作れるよう心がけているんですが、、、果たしてどこまでそれが結果として現れているでしょうか。。。
さて、このＢｒｕＪｎｅ４のモールドは、他の大きいサイズのＢｒｕモールドに比べて幼い顔立ちの可愛い表情を持っています。
サリーちゃん足のキッドボディーと組み合わせることによって、その”あどけない可愛さ”がさらに引き出されて、小さい娘がお好み方にはたまらない可愛さに仕上がりました。
私はどちらかというと大きい娘が好みですが、この娘には何とも言えない特別な可愛さのオーラがあって、見てて飽きないです。
画像だけでは実際の大きさがなかなか伝わらないので、３０インチの１４号Ｂｒｕに抱っこさせて写真を撮ってみました。
彼女がいかに小さいかわかっていただけるでしょうか？でも、大きい娘同様の細部にこだわった作りなんですよ。
 
 

New doll 19 inch Bru Jne 11, again?

 Many people may have wondered why I am posting the same doll I made in 2008 again.

Well, I often get requests to make a copy of the doll on my website and this doll I just posted is one of the most popular models.

I have made quite a few sisters of her since I made the first model in June 2008.

I don’t usually post the same doll on a website catalog, but this doll is not an exact copy of the Bru I made in 2008.

So I thought it might be a good idea to post her to show the differences.
How different?
Her dress is a steel blue color instead of dark green, but the biggest difference is in her eyes.
If you compare their photos side by side, you can tell this new Bru has different eyes.
Her eyes have blue spiral thread like enamel eyes you see in early French dolls, and her eye cut is smaller than the Bru I made in 2008.
I used size 1６ mm eyes for 2008 model Bru, but the new Bru has size 14 mm eyes, one size smaller.
That means her irises are also smaller. This smaller and narrower eye shape creates that piercing look of Bru, which I love.
All of my 19″ Bru Jne dolls are made from the same mold, but I change the size and shape of the eye cut depending on the kind of look I want to create.
If I want a sweet and innocent look, I would make the eye cut larger and use eyes with larger irises.
On the other hand, I also love the look of antique Bru with piercing eyes. So if I want to create that look, I need to apply eyes with smaller irises and make a narrower eye cut.
I love Bru Jne dolls because they come with so many different facial expressions.
Some have a sweet and innocent look, some of them have noble expressions like a princess or even have an attitude like a diva….
But I always have special feelings toward a Bru Jne with dark hair, blue dress and piercing blue eyes, This new Bru I just created has everything that I love about Bru.
Now you know why I posted the same doll again.

 新作のＢｒｕを見て”あれ？”と思った方も多いでしょうか？

表紙左上にある２００８年に作った作品となんだか似てますね。
私はＨＰに載っている作品と同じものを、、、というオーダーを良く受けますが、２００８年の６月に作った作品は、リクエストが最も多いＢｒｕのひとつです。
なので、彼女の姉妹は世界中に何体かいます。
コピーの作品は普段はＨＰのカタログには載せないことにしています。でも今回製作した作品は、まったくのコピーというわけではないのでお披露目することにしました。
さて、一体どこが違うのでしょう？
まず、ドレスの色がダークグリーンではなくて群青色っぽいブルーです。そして一番の違いは”目”です。
二人の画像を比べてみると良くわかると思いますが、新作の娘には違うタイプのグラスアイを使用しています。
初期のフレンチドールに見られるエナメルアイのような感じの、ブルーのスパイラルスレッドアイを使っていて、さらにアイカットを細く切れ長めにしてあります。
１９インチのＢｒｕヘッドには、普段は１６ｍｍのグラスアイを使用しますが、この娘にはワンサイズ小さ目の１４ｍｍを使いました。
とうことは虹彩が１６ｍｍより小さいわけで、当然アイカットもそれにあわせて細めです。この切れ長のアイカットと小さめの虹彩がかもし出すＢｒｕＪｎｅ独特の鋭い目つきが、実はとても好きなんです。
私のＨＰにある１９インチのＢｒｕＪｎｅ１１は、すべて同じモールドから作られていますが、作りたい表情によってアイカットをいろいろ変えています。
甘い感じを出したいときはアイカットをやや大きめに、虹彩も大きめなグラスアイを選びます。
逆に私が好きな鋭い目つきの娘を作りたいときは、アイカットを細く切れ長めに、虹彩は小さめのグラスアイを入れます。
アンティークのＢｒｕＪｎｅには本当にいろんな表情があります。やさしい顔の娘、プリンセスのように高貴な顔立ちの娘、ディーバのようにツンとした娘、などなど。
でもなぜか私は、茶色のウイッグにブルーのドレスを着た鋭い目つきのブルーアイのＢｒｕに惹かれてしまらしく、今回作った娘はその全部を兼ね備えたとても好みな娘です。
これで、なぜまた似たような作品をご紹介したか、ちょっとお判りになっていただけたでしょうか？
